a#GEDEISTGEDEISTm#THOMPSONTHOMPSONm#WARDWARD posted by Andy McAllister on Thursday, February 22, 2001

I am looking for the parents of EDWARD M. WARD and SARAH A. THOMPSON. I know that Benjamin Ward and John Ward both had sons named Edward between 1810 and 1820, but the timeframes and circumstances do not completely match. The other possibilities drawn from the 1820 Onslow Census are: Enock, Jesse, Jesse, Josiah (no Edward as son), Richard and Seth. Any help paring down this list would be greatly appreciated, either by discounting or supporting one of the candidates. Below is a summary of what I have found so far. I have found nothing on the Thompsons so far.

EDWARD M.WARD was born Abt. 1813 in Onslow Co., NC. He married SARAH A. THOMPSON August 03, 1840 in Onslow Co., NC.

Notes for EDWARD M. WARD:
Edward M. Ward was born in Onslow County, North Carolina around 1813. Since Edward Ward was the name of a local Revolutionary War hero and probable ancestor, there are many Edward Wards listed in the various Wills and other legal documents available. Therefore, I have not yet determined Edward's parents or confirmed his actual birth date. However, Census Records for 1840 through 1870 as well as his Confederate enlistment record confirm his Onslow birth as well as the approximate year (1812 - 1815). The Ward Family is prolific in Onslow County as well as the neighboring counties of Carteret and New Hanover. The Wards of Onslow and Carteret appear to trace back to a family that resided just South of Richmond, Virginia and that can be traced back to Jamestown.

Edward Ward was tradesman throughout his lifetime. He lived resided in Onslow County until at least 1848. He was married to the former Sarah Thompson in Onslow in 1840. Edward moved his family to the City of Wilmington by 1850 and was employed as a carpenter and mechanic. Prior to the Civil War, he owned $300 in real estate. [1840, 1850, 1870 Census]

Edward Ward enlisted on July 8, 1861 as a Private in what became Co. C., 7th Regiment, North Carolina Troops. He was listed as presented or accounted for until he was wounded at Gaine's Mill on June 27, 1862. The 7th North Carolina Regiment (including Company C) participated in enemy engagements at New Burn, North Carolina (3/14/1862) and Hanover Court House, Virginia (5/27/1862) prior to Gaine's Mill. At Gaine's Mill, also known as First Cold Harbor and the third of the Seven Days Battles, the 7th North Carolina served as part of General Branch's Brigade in General Ambrose Powell (A. P.) Hill's Division. The 7th North Carolina was on the right flank of Branch's Brigade and participated in a number of bloody charges during the afternoon of June 27 against the defensive positions of Union General Fitz John Porter's Brigade behind Boatswain's Creek (Swamp) just north of the Chickahominey River. Following Gaine's Mill, Edward was listed as absent wounded until July-August 186! !

3. He was reported absent without leave until March-April 1864, when he was discharged from the hospital at Richmond, Virginia. Edward Ward's military status was unknown from March-April 1864 to the end of the War, and he was officially reported as a deserter.

Following the Civil War, Edward continued trade work as a house painter in Wilmington. There are no death records for Edward, but there was a property sale announcement in the Wilmington Star for Sarah Ward in the City of Wilmington in 1874, which may indicate that Edward died prior to 1874. [Reaves]

More About EDWARD M. WARD: Military service: July 08, 1861, Co. C, 7th Regiment, North Carolina

Marriage Notes for EDWARD WARD and SARAH THOMPSON: Transcribed from Onslow Co., NC Marriage Bonds by Beverly Cole.

Children of EDWARD WARD and SARAH THOMPSON are: i. JOHN2 WARD, b. Abt. 1845, Onslow Co., NC.

Notes for JOHN WARD:

Service Record Summary: "Ward, John, Private - Born in Onslow County and resided in New Hanover County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in New Hanover County at age 17, July 8, 1861, for the war. Present or accounted for until wounded in the thigh at Hanover Court House, Virginia, May 27, 1862. Reported absent wounded until July-August, 1863, when he was reported absent without leave. Reported absent without leave until March-April, 1864, when he was reported a deserter to the enemy. No further records."

a#KINGKING posted by Jim King on Saturday, March 3, 2001

I am a King descendant of Capt. George KING of Darlington County, SC and am trying to identify his parents. Some of the clues suggest that he might be connected to the Kings of NE North Carolina. This George owned land in the Welsh Neck Tract, Craven County, SC in the mid 1750's. He served on a military expedition in 1759-60. There was also a Joseph King who owned land in the Welsh Neck Tract of Craven County, SC in the 1750's and served on a military expedition in 1760. My George King was born about 1725 and died in 1780.
I noticed that John and Priscilla King had sons George and Joseph. Do you in your research know about when they were born or where they lived. I also noticed a John King with wife Priscilla who died in Camden District, SC about 1780 with brothers George and Joseph. Is that possibly the son of John and Priscilla?
Thanks for any help that you may be able to give.

My 5th great grandfather was Obediah HOWARD, born in Onslow Co. NC in 1741. I am trying to find his parents, birth record, etc. I know his marriage, children, etc. Could you suggest a place to look in Onslow County that might have birth records that far back? How about any old genealogy material on the Howard family in that time period? I want to come to North Carolina to pursue Obehiah's ancestors, but I would like to know if the trip would be worthwhile before I come. Any suggestions you have would be sincerely appreciated.
