I just received from a look-up volunteer information that strongly suggests that some of my ancestors spent time in Onslow Co. NC. I've not previously done research in NC (still rather new to genealogy), so I'm hoping that someone can help me.
The information I received was from the 1900 census:
1900 NC: Onslow Co, White Oak 49-84-4-84 WHITE KELLUM, Jack 30 NC (Jul 1870), Ella 28 NC (Jan 1872), Mamie 4 NC (Apr 1896), Effie 2 NC (Mar 1898), Willie L 2/12 NC (Apr 1900)
My gggrandfather was Jack KELLUM, who married LuElla NORMAN. They had 2 children that I am aware of, Nancy Edna Lorella Kellum (my grandmother), b. 1898 and Willy, b. ca. 1900. As far as I know, Ella's parents lived in White County, Arkansas. My grandmother said that she was born in Searcy, AR. However, I can't find them there around 1900 and the story goes that Jack and Willy were killed in a tornado in 1901, after which Ella and Nancy Edna returned to live with her parents in AR.
Is anyone aware of a tornado occuring in that area around 1901? If so, I'm hoping that there might be newspaper accounts listing casualties as well as obituaries. I know nothing about Jack Kellum's family, but now wonder if they might have been from that area. According to the census at least, they were in NC.
Any other help, assistance, advice, etc. would be highly appreciated.
