Recently my cousin found a piece of paper belonging to her gg grandfather RICHARD BURTON SANDERS. On the paper were the names JOHN ALFRED SANDERS and his wife HESTER CLARICA FUTCH. We believe RICHARD BURTON SANDERS and JOHN ALFRED SANDERS are closely related. JOHN ALFRED SANDERS had a son names HERMAN LAFAYETTE SANDERS. Apparently all of these folks lived around the Onslow area. Do you have any information these folks? In addition, we believe our ggg grandfather was ROBERT SANDERS who married SARAH ANN PHILLIPS 12 Dec 1826 in Morgan Co., GA. Their first son JAMES ALFORD SANDERS was my gg grandfather. We think all of these SANDERS are from the same family. Any help appreciated.

I have a Kent Co., Delaware, Court Record, dated 10 March 1770, in which Mary Chadwick (widow of John Chadwick) of Onslow County, North Carolina, is trying to recover rent/damages from James Smuthers on 50 acres of land in Onslow Co., NC. This James Smothers possibly is an ancestor of mine who moved between DE/MD and NC sometime before 1770. If you know of these Chadwick & Smothers/Smuthers/Smithers families, please write: Bill Smothersn

I am researching my family tree and am hoping you can help me. My great grandfather, MichaeL SULLIVAN had a sister Nell. She was married to Avel NELSEN, and died in Chisholm, Minnesota in 1983. In her obituary it lists 2 sons, Joe of Chisholm and Dr. Robert of Swansboro, N.C. I do not know what kind of Dr. he was. I thought you may have access to a city directory for 1983 and could find me more information. I do not know if he was married or if he had children. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

m#ROUTHROUTHm#TURNERTURNERm#YORKYORK posted by Larry W. Cates on Saturday, September 21, 2002

I seem to have discovered a very slippery new ancestor. The spelling of his name changes constantly in the records, but the most common spelling is Maltiah or Meltiah TURNER. I think this was the original spelling, but record keepers misheard the name and spell it variously, Mattiah, Mattias, Matthias, Matter, Maltyre--even Malich or Malachi. He served in the Continental Line from North Carolina and was apparently grievously wounded. He was able to receive an invalid's pension from the state of North Carolina, until his case file was turned over to the federal government. He was living in Chatham County, NC by 1790 and continued to live there through 1800. By 1811, he was living in Randolph County, NC. By 1831, at the time of his death, he resided in Montgomery County, the part that became Stanly County. Two of his daughters seem to have married in Randolph County: Elizabeth to Joshua ROUTH (1810) and Polly or Mary to Stephen YORK (1822). YORK accompanied TURNER to ! Montgomery County by 1830. The question is, where did Maltiah TURNER come from? The given name is not that unusual in New England and I have found a couple of other instances of it along the coast of North Carolina, both in Onslow County: a Meltiah STRANGE and a Meltiah ARNOLD. The earliest tracing of Maltiah TURNER is when he sold his bounty land warrant interests in Pitt County in 1783 to Col. James ARMSTRONG (of Craven County), commander in the 6th NC Continental Line Regiment. The witness to that alienation was Levi WEST, a drummer in the 6th Regt, who had enlisted himself from Onslow County. Many other members of the 6th also came from Onslow County. I don't think TURNER came from Pitt County. Is it possible he came from Onslow County, himself? A Matthias Davis TURNER witnessed the 1764 will of Absalom HART in Onslow County. A Matthias TURNER, along with Benjamin TURNER (12 Sep 1764), witnessed a deed from Peter MORTON to John OWEN for land on Lamot's Creek (a branch of New River)in Onslow. (DB G! /2) Could it be that Matthias is Maltiah? The names are constantly changing and I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same person. In 1790 Maltiah is called Mattes in the census of Chatham County. In 1800, he is called Mattias. It is not a big leap to think he is the same person.
