Bayne, Gerard Michael "Gerry" 

JACKSONVILLE - Gerard "Gerry" Michael Bayne, 53, of Jacksonville, died 
Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at his home. 
A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008, at Jones 
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thomas Davis officiating. Burial will follow 
at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors. 
Gerard was born in Johnson City, N.Y. He served his country with the U.S. 
Marine Corps and retired with the rank of gunnery sergeant. He was also a 
member of American Legion Post 265. 
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Bayne; and a sister, Linda Bayne. 
Gerry is survived by his wife, Carol Graham Bayne of the home; one daughter, 
Tracy Kemp and her husband Mike of Jacksonville; his mother, Sally Landis 
Bayne of Bath, Pa.; and his father, Kenneth Bayne of West Chester, Pa.; two 
brothers, Martin Bayne of Albany, N.Y., and Kelly Bayne of San Diego; two sisters, 
Kenna Cuomo of Warrenton, Va., and Susan Donges of Bath, Pa.; three 
grandchildren, Kelsie, Micah and MaKenzee Kemp; and several nieces and nephews. 
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 16, 2008, at Jones Funeral 
Home in Jacksonville with rosary service at 7 p.m.

Boyd, Alton 


SEA LEVEL - Alton Burnell Boyd, 81, formerly of Elkin, died May 13, 2008, at 
Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay in Sea Level. 
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. 
He was a merchant marine with the Boblo Company until his retirement in 1991. 
He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran and a member of VFW Post 7794 in Elkin. 
Survivors include wife, Elsie Wall Boyd; stepson, Larry Nixon of Raleigh; stepdaughter, 
Elaine Stevenson of Clemmons; and two step-grandchildren.

SWANSBORO - Angela "Angie" Waters Cox, 45, of Swansboro, died May 12, 
2008, at Carteret General Hospital. 
A memorial Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Peletier 
First Missionary Baptist Church in Peletier, with the Rev. William Ray Davis 
officiating. A private burial will be in the church cemetery. 
She was a native of Carteret County, a reservationist with Emerald Isle Realty and 
a member of the Peletier First Missionary Baptist Church. 
Survivors include husband, Raymond "Ray" Charles Cox; sons, Perry Morris of 
Swansboro and Daniel Roberts of Cedar Point; a stepdaughter, Carrie Cox of 
Smithfield; parents, Bobby and Lois Mobley Waters of Swansboro; and brother, 
Bryan Waters of Swansboro. 
The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and at 
other times at the home of her parents.

Curwen, Betty 

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Betty McKoy Curwen, born in Spartanburg, S.C., on 
Aug. 22, 1926, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008, in Rockledge, Fla. 
Betty spent her entire life as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, 
and great-grandmother. She was a true and caring friend. She always had a 
smile, a wave, a hug, a laugh for all of those who crossed her path. 
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Bertram Holman 
Curwen Jr. 
She is mourned and will be greatly missed by her three loving sons, Bertram 
Holman Curwen III, of Rockledge, Fla., James McKoy Curwen of Goose 
Creek, S.C., and William Garvin Curwen of Mechanicsville, Va.; loving 
daughter, Barbara Curwen Kaiwi of Rockledge, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, B.J.,
 Brie, Colt, Lindsey, Ashley, Christie, Chelsea, Kayla, Martina, and Lenora; 
10 great-grandchildren; and one more great-grandchild arriving this year. 
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, 
May 16, 2008, at the Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home, 1200 South U.S. 1, 
Rockledge, Fla.

COVE CITY - Ralph Hargett Jr., 72, of Cove City, died May 13, 2008, at UNC 
Hospital, Chapel Hill. 
A funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2008, at Bryant Chapel A.M.E. 
Zion Church with the Rev. Brian T. Cornelius officiating. Burial will follow the 
service in the White Cemetery, Cove City. 
He was a lifetime member of Bryant Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served 
in many capacities, a 1955 graduate of Newbold High School, Fort Barnwell, and 
employed with the Dupont Plant of Kinston for almost 33 years. 
Survivors include wife of 49 years, Clementine Jarman Hargett of the home; daughters, 
Icso-lene Hargett of Highland, Calif., and Marilyn Jean Moore of Newark, N.J.; 1 
grandchild; sisters, Vonia Bell Clark, Ann Bishop and Doris Jackson, all of Cove City; 
brothers, Theodore Hargett of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Clyde Hargett of Cove City.

ST. MARYS, Ga. - Thomas Jefferson "T.J." Watkins, 47, and his wife Cindy Trott 
Watkins, 44, both of St. Marys, Ga., died May 5, 2008. 
A memorial service was held on May 9, 2008, at Kingsland First Baptist Church 
with the Rev. Tony Barber officiating. 
T.J. served 20 years in the U.S. Navy submarine service and retired as a nuclear 
framed chief machinist's mate in 2002. For the past four years, T.J. was employed 
as the assistant quality assurance officer at Naval Submarine Support Center, Kings 
Bay, Ga. Cindy, formerly of Belgrade, was a homemaker. They were wed in 1982 in 
Maysville and were members of Five Points Baptist Church. 
Survivors include daughter, Jennifer Michelle Watkins Redding of St. Marys, Ga.; 
son, Tye Christopher Watkins of St. Marys. Ga.; her sisters, Dawn Jenkins of 
Belgrade; her brother, Eli Alton Trott Jr. of Elon; her mother, Elizabeth M. "Betty 
Rose" Trott of Jacksonville; his sisters, Connie Barnes of Moyok, Lynn Cartwright of

Wolbert, Marilyn 


NEWPORT - Marilyn Sue Wolbert, 63, of Newport, died May 11, 2008, at 
Duke University Medical Center.

Home Chapel in Morehead City with the Rev. Eric Lindblade officiating. 
She was a computer analyst with the Naval Aviation Depot, Cherry Point, and 
retired in 2003 after 30 years of federal service. After retiring, she worked for 
Lockheed Martin in the informa-tion services department as a senior consultant 
until 2007. 
Survivors include husband, Eugene Wolbert; daughter, MaryBeth Wolbert Lanto 
of Cedar Point; son, Robert Eugene Scoville Wolbert of Winterville; and five 
grandchildren.

Laverne Collins Simpson 

MAYSVILLE - Laverne Collins Simpson, 76, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at 
Craven Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Onslow County. A 
memorial service was held 4 p.m. Sunday at Sayland Funeral Home, 
Maysville. Lois Simpson officiated. Survivors include two sons, Reuben 
Simpson and Gregory Simpson of Maysville; two daughters, Ellen Simpson 
of Maysville and Donna Griffin of Trenton; one brother, Everette Collins of 
Williamsburg, Va.; two sisters, Evelyn Provost of Maysville and Lorraine Gliott 
of New Bern; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Sayland Funeral

Dias, Ronald 


SNEEDVILLE, Tenn. - Ronald Dias, 71, formerly of Jacksonville, died April 27, 
2008, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. 
A graveside service with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, 
at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. 
He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a gunnery sergeant serving, almost 24 
years. His home base was New River Air Station. He was awarded two Purple 
Hearts, was a life member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Disabled American 
Veterans and the American Legion. He owned and operated Ten Mile Gun Shop in 
Maple Hill. 
Survivors include wife, Shirley Dias; son, Don Dias of Mississippi; daughter, Toni 
Tish of Georgia; stepsons, Mike Phipps of Midway Park, Dan Phipps of Maysville 
and Joel Phipps of Greensboro; and two granddaughters.

Anderson, Mary 

JACKSONVILLE - Mary Anderson, 64, of Jacksonville, passed away Saturday, May 
17, 2008, at her home. 
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2008, at Jones Funeral Home of 
Jacksonville. 
She worked as a LPN at the Naval Hospital aboard Camp Lejeune and she also worked 
as a nurse with the Burgaw and Vanceboro correctional centers. Mary was a loving and 
caring person and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. 
She is survived by her four sisters, Dot Hudspeth of Saucier, Miss.; Elizabeth Pierce 
and Ellen Williams of Richlands and Gladys Williams of Grimesland; and three brothers, 
Obie Lee Anderson of Greenville, Rudolph Anderson of Stokes and Clifton Anderson of 
Miami, Fla. 
She is preceded in death by her parents, Tobe and Lula Anderson, and her sister, Iva 
Mae Williams.   The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Jones 
Funeral Home of Jacksonville.

MOREHEAD CITY - Ida Mae Broadhurst Doyle, 75, of Morehead City, died May 17, 2008.

Morehead City with the Rev. Herb Pearson officiating. A graveside service will follow at 
Bayview Cemetery. 
She worked for many years at Colony Day Care Center in Morehead City, supervising the 
care of infants. During her married years, the family resided in Morehead City, Chicago, 
Washington D.C. and Raleigh, before returning to Morehead City in 1969. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Doyle. 
Survivors include sons, John Doyle Jr. of Morehead City and Tom Doyle of Denver; 
daughters, Sandy Doyle Wood of Wilmington and Bonnie Rosell of Sarasota, Fla.; and 
13 grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends at noon on Thursday at the funeral home and at the home 
following the graveside service.

A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Friday May 23, 2008, at Salem Baptist Church in 
Sneads Ferry, with the Rev. Jody Yopp officiating. 
Following the service he will be laid to rest at the Ennett Family Cemetery on Ennett
Lane in Sneads Ferry. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Lena Smith Edens; his 
brothers, Jimmy, Gene and Gerald Edens; and sister, Betty Ragno. 
He is survived by his loving wife and soul mate of 58 years Geraldine "Mama" Edens 
of the home. 
His two daughters, Bonnie Thomas and husband Louis, and Gail Mulligan and husband 
Nicky; his two sons, Donnie Edens and wife Nancy, and Timmy Edens and wife Angie, 
all of Sneads Ferry. 
Nine grandchildren, Tracie Ennis and husband George, Walker Thomas and wife Christy, 
Jeremy Edens, Steven Edens and wife Barbara, Timothy Edens, Andy Edens, Courtney 
Mulligan, Amelia Moore and husband Zach and Heather Edens 
Eleven great-grandchildren, Joshua Thomas, Alexandria Ennis, Mollie Thomas, Miranda, 
Lee, Isaac and Gracie Edens, Andrew, Savannah, Mason and Casey Edens. 
His mother-in-law, Rosaleen Justice; brother-in-laws, Ronnie Yopp and wife Wilma, Buddy 
Yopp and Lou Ragno; sisters-in-law, Thelma and Gladys Edens. 
Although he loved traveling as a truck driver his love for family was even stronger. "Daddy" 
helped each of his children build a part of their home. After retiring from the Onslow County 
Maintenance Department, Mama and Daddy continued to have many more adventures on 
the road. 
He was a loving husband, the best daddy, and greatest Gramps anyone could ever ask for. 
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Liberty Home Health Care and Hospice of 
Jacksonville, Arthritis Foundation,    American Heart Association, American Lung 
Association and the American Diabetes Foundation.   The family will receive friends at all

Regional Medical Center.

NEW BERN - Clyde Earl Jenkins, 68, of New Bern, died May 19, 2008, at home.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1963 and was issued honorable discharge as 
rank of captain. He started coaching soccer in 1979, was a member of Believers Fellowship 
Church and was involved in prison ministry.

She was reunited with her father, Manly Augusta Rhue, and her mother, Bettie Elizabeth 
Eubanks Rhue; sister, Mary Elizabeth Townsend; sister-in-law, Nanny Rhue; and brother 
Robert Rhue, all formerly of Peletier.

Johnston and Teresa Moore of Peletier and Lisa Wallace of Henderson; two sons, Bobby

VANCEBORO - Mrs. Magnolia Roebuck Whitley, 91, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, 
at her home. 
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel in 
Vanceboro. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. 
Mrs. Whitley was born March 27, 1917, in Martin County, and spent her youth in 
Robersonville, and most of her adult life in Vanceboro. She worked with Durham Life 
Insurance in Raleigh prior to moving to Craven County. She was co-owner of Whitley 
Insurance in Vanceboro with her husband, and served as vice president, and later as 
president, of Vanceboro Hardware. Mrs. Whitley was a member of Vanceboro Christian 
Church and the Christian Women's Fellowship. A sweet and gentle person, "Maggie" had 
the gift of hospitality. She loved flowers, was a wonderful cook, and enjoyed playing the 
piano. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be greatly missed. 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Alton F. 
Whitley, in 2002, and by four sisters, four brothers, and five half-brothers. 
She is survived by her daughters, Madge Whitley Ferguson and husband, Patrick, of 
Blairsville, Ga., Barbara W. Thompson and husband, Philip, of Gibsonville, N.C., and Jane 
D. Whitley of Vanceboro; grandchild, Maxfield Alton Sussman of Cumming, Ga.; 
sisters-in-law, Dorothy Whitley English of Athens, Ga., and Doris E. Roebuck of 
Robersonville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

SNEEDVILLE, Tenn. - Ronald Dias, 71, formerly of Jacksonville, died April 27, 2008, 
at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. 
A graveside service with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008, at 
Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. 
He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a gunnery sergeant serving, almost 24 years. 
His home base was New River Air Station. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, was a 
life member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Disabled American Veterans and the 
American Legion. He owned and operated Ten Mile Gun Shop in Maple Hill.

She worked as a LPN at the Naval Hospital aboard Camp Lejeune and she also worked 
as a nurse with the Burgaw and Vanceboro correctional centers. Mary was a loving and 
caring person and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. 
She is survived by her four sisters, Dot Hudspeth of Saucier, Miss.; Elizabeth Pierce and 
Ellen Williams of Richlands and Gladys Williams of Grimesland; and three brothers, Obie 
Lee Anderson of Greenville, Rudolph Anderson of Stokes and Clifton Anderson of Miami,
 Fla. 
She is preceded in death by her parents, Tobe and Lula Anderson, and her sister, Iva

at Britthaven of Jacksonville.

in Jacksonville with the Rev. Ralph Gurganus officiating. Burial will follow at 2 
pm. Friday at Coastal Carolina State Veteran's Cemetery. 
He was past master and member of Richlands Masonic Lodge 564, served two 
years in the U.S. Navy and retired after 25 years of service with Morale, Welfare 
and Recreation. 
Survivors include wife, Jane P. Pike of the home; sons, Gene Pike of Rock Hill, 
S.C., Earl B. Pike of Kenansville, Jerry Pike of Washington and Robert Hoffman 
of Jacksonville; daughter, Sharon Daugherty of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brothers,

NEW BERN - Clyde Earl Jenkins, 68, of New Bern, died May 19, 2008, at home.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1963 and was issued honorable discharge 
as rank of captain. He started coaching soccer in 1979, was a member of Believers 
Fellowship Church and was involved in prison ministry.

Harrison Jenkins of Vanceboro; daughters, Michele Price and Nicole LeAnne Jenkins,

Stephanie was born July 18, 1979, in Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City, the 
daughter of Steve and JoAnn Griffin of Wilmington. 
Surviving, in addition to her parents; are her husband, Brandon Thomas Kennedy, U.S. 
Army, stationed in Camp Speicher, Iraq; a brother, Michael Griffin of Wilmington; maternal 
grandfather, D.C. Metheny of Richmond, Va.; paternal grandmother, Susie Griffin of 
Swansboro; aunt, Gail Griffin; uncle, Pat and aunt, Nancy Metheny; cousin, Brandon 
Metheny of Norfolk, Va.; cousin Kim Sanders and her husband, John; cousins, Justin, 
Katlyn and Emily Sanders, all of Mechanicsville, Md.; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, 
Kim and Jeff Quarles; sister-in-law, Jessica; brothers-in-law, Brent and Jeremy;

Remembered is her maternal grandmother, Joan Marie Metheny who preceded her in death.

Stephanie attended St. Mary Elementary School and was a 1997 graduate of New Hanover 
High School. She was a 2008 graduate of the R.N. Nursing Program at Cape Fear Community 
College. Next to her wedding day, graduating from nursing school was the proudest day of her 
life. She was an employee at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. 
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at St. Mary 
Catholic Church, 412 Ann Street, Wilmington. The service will be celebrated by the Rev. Bob 
Kus. Interment will follow at Onslow Memorial Park in Jacksonville at 2 p.m. The family will 
receive friends and family at the church from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

WILMINGTON - Lee Roy Williams Sr., 65, of Wilmington died May 23, 2008, at his residence. 
Lee was born in Cornwall, N.Y. on June 7, 1942. He was raised in Highland Falls, N.Y., by 
his loving sister, Marge and her husband, Tom. After graduating from the U. S. Military 
Academy and serving his country in Vietnam, Lee spent 30 successful years in the banking 
industry at Central Carolina Bank. He was very active in the community, having served as 
President of the Friendly City Kiwanis Club and the Durham Sales and Marketing Executives 
organization. He continued his civic service as a member of the Beach Renourishment 
Committee in the town of North Topsail Beach and was recently elected to the Board of 
Directors of North Chase in Wilmington. Additionally, he made young children smile each 
year when he brought Santa Claus to their schools. He held dual memberships in Pleasant 
Grove United Methodist Church in Raleigh and Sneads Ferry Presbyterian Church, which he 
joined when he and his wife relocated to North Topsail Beach several years ago. Lee's 
passions ran from deep sea fishing to Duke basketball to spending time with friends and 
family. Lee never met a stranger. 
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Williams of Wilmington; one son, Lee Roy Williams 
Jr. of Creedmoor; two stepsons, Fletcher Mangum of Wilmington and Robb Mangum of 
Raleigh; and one brother-in-law, Thomas Falk of New Windsor, N.Y. 
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Sneads Ferry 
Presbyterian Church. 
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

JACKSONVILLE - Anthony Bryan "Buddy" Blossom, 69, of Jacksonville, formerly of Ft. 
Worth, Texas, died peacefully in his sleep Sunday, May 25, 2008, in Jacksonville. 
He was born in Pender County on April 1, 1939, to the late Frances Boney Blossom and 
William Kenneth Blossom. Buddy was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, a marine biologist 
and a funeral director. He retired from Jones Funeral Home of Jacksonville several years ago. 
Buddy is survived by a son, Michael Anthony Blossom and his wife, Wendy; and two 
granddaughters, Kaylee and Emily, all of Ft. Worth, Texas. He is also survived by a brother, 
William C. Blossom of Wilmington; sisters, Betty Sevison and her husband, Jack of 
Brigham City, Utah, Frances Bowen and her husband, Frank of Carolina Beach, Mary 
Anna Bessellieu of Wilmington and Lynda Crowley and her husband, Robert of Kill Devil 
Hills; and a cousin, Mary Bland Lanier of Wallace. "Uncle Buddy" had many devoted 
nieces and nephews, especially one, Anna B. McCauley of Newport.

MOREHEAD CITY - Donald Wesley "Dynamite" Mason Jr., 82, of Morehead City, died 
May 24, 2008, at Carteret General Hospital.

He was a World War II veteran, who served in the U.S. Navy, in the Battle of Normandy

Grounds Custodian. 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores "Dee" Smith Mason.

NEWPORT - Jenneth Idell Senter, 94, of Newport, died May 26, 2008, at Britthaven 
of Newport. 
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Franklin Memorial 
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jose Mora officiating. 
She was preceded in death by her first husband, William Warren Riedell; and her 
second husband, Lester David Senter Sr. 
Survivors include sons, William Riedell of Tallahassee, Fla., and Lester David Senter 
of Newport; daughter, Donna Rice of Warsaw, Va.; seven grandchildren;ldldlznndchildren.

JACKSONVILLE - Thomas F. "Tommy" Baldwin Sr., of Jacksonville, passed away 
Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at his home. 
Tommy worked for more than 20 years with Wachovia Bank. He loved sports and 
enjoyed coaching local basketball, baseball and soccer teams. He also enjoyed 
his lifelong hobby of racing and breeding homing pigeons. 
He had a special love for his three grandchildren, Hannah, Trey, and Ellie. 
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008, at Jones Funeral Home 
of Jacksonville with the Rev. Wayne Hansley officiating. 
He is survived by his son, Thomas F. "Te" Baldwin Jr., and his wife Christina and 
granddaughter Hannah and grandson, Trey, all of Richlands; son, Matt Baldwin 
and his wife Cindy and granddaughter Ellie, all of Durham; brother, Bud Baldwin of

and grandmother. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Maxwell Findeisen Sr.; and grandson, 
Dennis Maxwell Campanelli. 
Survivors include sons, Carl Maxwell and wife Jonelle Findeisen Jr. of Wallace; daughters, 
Wilma Kay Taylor of Trenton, Carletta and husband Douglas Carlyle of Richlands, 
Gwendolyn and husband Patrick Morton of Jacksonville, Pamela and husband William 
Parks of Jacksonville; brother, John Murray of Kinston; grandchildren, Charles Taylor,

Groom, Robert 

Robert William Groom, 83, of Smallwood Drive, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Onslow 
Memorial Hospital. 
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, at First Christian Church 
on Gum Branch Road, with Pastor Linwood Darden officiating. Burial will follow at Onslow 
Memorial Park with military honors, Chaplain Jones Ofuasia officiating and Dennis Combs 
conducting the Masonic Rites Ceremony. 
Robert was born in Boston and was the son of the late Robert J. and Helena Kearns Groom. 
He also was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Muriel Scott Fellows 
Groom. 
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in Boston during World War II. He participated in the 
Battle of Iwo Jima, the occupation of Japan, and served during the Korean Conflict and the 
Vietnam War. Mr. Groom advanced through the enlisted ranks to become an officer. He 
retired as a captain in January 1976 with more than 31 years of honorable service to his 
country and the Corps. He was member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, the Legion of the 
Moose, Semper Fidelis Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Consistory of New Bern, Sudan Temple 
of New Bern, Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars 
and the 5th Marine Division Association. 
He is survived by two sons, Robert Lindsay Groom of Boise, Idaho, and Paul William Groom 
of Jacksonville; four daughters, Nancy Jean Royak of Buckley, Wash., Joyce Scott Bays of 
Jacksonville, Karen Elaine Lee of Jacksonville, Fla., and Janet Lee Gilchrist of Jacksonville; 
and nine grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two 
stepgreat-grandsons. 
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville.

JACKSONVILLE - Joseph Pittman Harris, 75, of Jacksonville, died May 29, 2008, at home. 
A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at Jones Funeral Home Chapel in Jacksonville. 
Interment will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors. 
He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps as a master gunnery sergeant and was a member of the 
Disabled American Veterans, Fleet Reserve Association and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. 
Survivors include wife, Evelyn B. Harris of Jacksonville; son, William "Bill" Harris of Jacksonville; 
daughter, Louann Harris of Jacksonville; brother, Bill Harris of Jacksonville; and sister, Betty 
Spahn of Gonzales, Texas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

HUBERT - Arthur "Johnny" Marvin Miller, 79, of Hubert, died May 28, 2008. 
Arthur was born January 19, 1929, in Appleton, Wis., the son of the late Adam Miller and Rose 
Schmit Miller. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mildred "Billie" Coates Miller; and a 
stepson, Jimmy Dail Blackwell. 
As a young man, he was the state of Wisconsin lightweight Golden Gloves champion three 
years in a row. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring as a gunnery sergeant. 
He served two tours in Vietnam, received the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, 
seven Good Conduct Medals, a National Defense Service Medal and was also awarded the Pistol 
Marksman Badge, and the Rifle Marksman Badge. He was also retired from the U.S. Civil Service. 
After his retirement, he enjoyed life with his wife Billie and his family. 
Arthur is survived by two daughters; Connie G. Blackwell-Whalley and her husband Tom "Possum" 
of Swansboro and Tammy S. Bennett and her husband David of Hubert. He is also survived by seven 
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. 
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 1, 2008, at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral 
and Cremation Service, Oleander Chapel, Wilmington. 
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Charles Trull officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park with military honors.

JACKSONVILLE - Lila Adams Morton, loving Mother, Grandma, Great Grandma and 
Great-Great-Grandma, 88, of Jacksonville and formerly of Broad Creek, died May 29,

She was a member of Richlands Methodist Church, a past member of Broad Creek 
Methodist Church, member of the Eastern Star of Carteret County, member of the 
Historical Society of Carteret County, member of the Democratic Party and an avid 
seamstress. 
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Richlands Methodist 
Church with the Rev. Stan Brown officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Broad 
Creek Cemetery. 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph L. Morton; son, Michael J. Morton; 
daughter, Minnie Lee Morton; brothers, Leslie Adams and Rudolph Adams; sisters, 
Kathleen Lewis and Lula Nixon. 
Survivors include daughter, Grace Morton and husband Harold C. Morton of 
Jacksonville; six grandchildren, Mitzi Johnson and husband Billy, Jennifer Morton 
Burdeau and husband Steve, Ricky Morton and wife Brenda, Cindy Padgett and 
husband Phil, Linda Barnette and husband Christopher, and Deanna Thompson and 
husband Matt; 13 great-grandchildren, Megan, Samantha and C.J. Barnette, Jeremy 
Cox, Amanda Fitzsimmons and husband Patrick, Matt Johnson, Josh Johnson and wife 
Jamie, Kristie and Rielly Morton, Jacob, Barry and Stevie Grace Padgett, and Alexia 
Thompson; four great-great-grandchildren, Ethan and Thomas Fitzsimmons, Makena 
and Makiah Johnson; and one daughter-in-law, Virginia Morton. 
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, one hour prior 
to the service at the church.

Seda, Aida 

HUBERT - Aida Iris "Cuca" Seda peacefully left this earth to be with our Lord May 29, 2008. 
She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Julio; and infant son, Ferdinand. 
Cuca was born July 30, 1937, in San German, Puerto Rico. She was a wonderful wife, mother 
and abuella. 
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 2, 2008 at Coastal Carolina State Veterans 
Cemetery. 
She is survived by her children Ana and Al Smallwood, Rebecca and Eric Miller, Jes Seda, 
Edna and Jeff Parrott, Raquel and Swindell Taylor; grandchildren, Johnny and Alexis Alvarez, 
Zach and Corey Page, Buddy and Kaylyn Taylor, Angelina and Seleena Parrott; several 
brothers and sisters; friends; and one special dog, Bubba.
